With the growing population and traffic congestion in Chennai, the capital of Tamilnadu, the formation of second capital is in need at Madurai. Chennai is 750 km from Kanniyakumari. Most of the public sector department powers are now in Chennai. Even to start a small scale industry the new entrepreneurs have to go to Chennai to meet various department officials and to get necessary permission and orders to run their units. Due to incur huge amount and time waste many new entrepreneurs are struggling to start small and micro units in southern districts. Southern Tamilnadu is lagging behind in trade and industrial development. In order to obtain the permission and orders related to the trade and industry the traders as well as general public have now travel to Chennai from Kanniyakumari, Tuticorin, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Dindigul, Sivagangai and Pudukottai.
Madurai is a historical and ancient place credited with the development of Tamil Sangam. Madurai is the centre of the southern districts and ideal for second capital. One third of the population of Tamilnadu are living in the southern districts. To ensure economic growth in South Tamilnadu, trade and industrial units would be established more. When Madurai becomes the second capital the large scale manufacturing industries around Chennai are likely to come to Madurai and south Tamilnadu; small ancillary units based on large industries would be also located in the area which pave avenues to provide more employment opportunities for the educated youths in this region. Adequate land, human resources and infrastructure are also available in southern districts for the establishment of various govt department offices, when Madurai is
announced as the second capital.
All the roads running out of Madurai are being well connected with four lanes; Madurai have all other facilities viz rail transport, International Airport, AIIMS Hospital, Regional Passport Office Madras High Court Bench, Thoothukudi Port etc., and if Madurai is formed as the second capital, the large scale manufacturing industries announced by the Union Govt would be located in the southern part of Tamilnadu, which possess sufficient acres of empty lands, to meet out the infrastructures needed for various departments to be formed.
