Chamber’s unremitting efforts and sustained strong representations over the years are to a considerable extent responsible for the approval of the Union Government and
for the implementation of the 140 year old strategically important Sethu Samudram Canal Project at the revised cost of Rs. 2427 crores. Implementation of the scheme, which was inaugurated at Madurai by the former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on 02.07.2005, will immensely benefit coastal shipping, and substantially activate industrial development, employment opportunities and development of minor ports in the southern part of our Country. Chamber has been pressing with the Union Government for early completion of this gigantic project on any one of the suitable alternate routes.
