The Chamber organized and convened several Seminars, Conferences, Bandh & Fasting to focus the attention of Central Government and Railway Administration alike on the urgent need for linking Karur with Tuticorin via. Madurai by Broad Gauge, during 1970s. This Broad Gauge project, which was closed as economically not viable, was taken again for re-survey only in pursuance of the demand by the Chamber delegation to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Morarji Desai in the year 1978.
To insist our demand and enlighten the politicians, a meeting of all Members of Parliament belonging to Tamilnadu was arranged at New Delhi on 22.11.1978 and our former President Thiru V.P.R. Gangaram Dorairaj addressed the gathering. Chamber was instrumental for the completion of the said Broad Gauge Project, which gave Broad Gauge link to Madurai and down south. After completion of the project, our Chamber organized a meeting of the Members of Parliament belonging to Tamilnadu at New Delhi on 15.12.1994 wherein various important Railway Projects required for Tamilnadu were discussed in detail and all the Members of Parliament who participated in the meeting, irrespective of their party affiliations, promised to unitedly raise their voice in parliament, as well as with the Railway Minister for the introduction of direct trains to north Indian stations. The then President of the Chamber Thiru. S. Rethinavelu addressed the said gathering of MPs. As a result of this meeting the Nagercoil - Mumbai express in the new Broad Gauge line was introduced.
Due to the sustained efforts taken by our Chamber with the support of M.Ps and MLAs in the region, Koodal Nagar Railway Station near Madurai is being converted as a full fledged Station the second B.G. line project between Madurai and Dindigul between Dindigul and Pollachi and between Virudhunagar Aruppukottai and Manamadurai have been completed. For the first time in the Railways, the Hon’ble Union Railway Minister Kumari Mamata Banerjee conducted a Pre - Budget Interaction meeting with industry leaders and representatives of leading Chambers of Commerce & Industry at New Delhi on 6th February, 2010. Chamber Former President Thiru S.Rethinavelu, President Thiru N. Jegatheesan and Secretary Thiru J. Rajamohan participated in the Meeting. With the completion of the double BG line project in the busy Chennai, Madurai section, Chamber is now pressing for speedy completion of remaining portion of the project in Madurai-Kanyakumari section in the Chennai-Madurai Kanyakumari BG double line project.
