Our Chamber was the first to voice the demand in the year 1968 for setting up a Bench of the Madras High Court at Madurai. The Chamber’s deposition before the Jaswant Singh Commissionwas primarily responsible for the recommendation by that Committee for establishing a High Court Bench Madurai in 1985. Due to the sustained efforts taken by the Chamber and Madurai Bar Association, the Bench of the Madras High Court at Madurai is now housed in a huge complex constructed at a cost of Rs. 56 crores, which was inaugurated on 24.07.2004 by Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Justice R. Lahoti. During the first anniversary function of the High Court Bench held on 24.07.2005, the then Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Justice Shri Markandeya Katju felicitated our Chamber for its unstinted efforts for the establishment of the Bench at Madurai and honoured our the then President Thiru S. Rethinavelu with “Ponnadai and Memento”.
